Knock on effects of benefit cuts 6.2.12

Wheelchair user

An article written by the Guardian has highlighted a growing concern by leading disability charities that since the governments focus on reducing fraud in benefit claims, they have seen an increase in reported abuse against people with disabilities.

The article identifies Scope, Mencap, Leonard Chesire disability, The National Autisctic Society, Royal National Institute for the Blind and Disability Alliance as speaking out having seen numbers of people contacting them after being taunted in the street rise.

The fear of these Charities is that the constant stories of mass abuse regarding benefit claims by people with disabilities is creating a belief that people with disabilities don’t contribute.
